Lovers Explain Marketing
Hey Friends,
Sorry for being dark last week. I was on vacation with the family in sunny San Diego, my old stomping ground, and a place that will always hold such a deep place in my heart.
Reflecting back on my journey from gigging musician to agency owner to start-up founder, I remember quite vividly one time early on in my career I was on a panel discussing the difference between marketing and branding.
I stumbled my way through it, crashing and burning wishing there was a visual way to represent what I was thinking.
Fast forward a year or two as I was reading one of Marty Neiumuier’s books and there it was… The ultimate visual representation of branding.
Taken from Marty Neumeier’s ZAG (a book I highly recommend), these illustrations are a raunchy but truthful representation of the relationship we have with different marketing functions.
Hope this helps to visualize the difference between branding and marketing, and as always, reach out with any questions.
I’m all 👂’s.

My Current Reading List
🙋♂️ Thanks for the recommendations thus far on my next book. If you have one, please send it over as I’m a sponge these days.
Strategy is your Words by Mark Pollard (I’ve been following Mark and his Sweathead Strategy Community for a while and his newest book is so far a great read)
48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene (More of a coffee-table book that should be looked at often as it’s brilliantly written and 100% applicable to today’s culture)
